Welcome to our advocacy toolkit.
Here you'll find links to factsheets, talking points, letter writing guidelines, and many more tools you can use to educate others about why Iowans deserve midwifery care!
What else can you do to further the goals of safe, evidence-based maternity care for mothers and babies in Iowa?
Attend FOIM meetings and events
Educate yourself
Learn about the Midwives Model of Care, the safety of out-of-hospital birth, and the CPM credential. When you are knowledgeable about your subject, you can inform others. Check out our Resources page and our Q&A for links and more information.
Keep informed about Iowa's progress
Spread the word
Tell all your friends and family members about Friends of Iowa Midwives, and encourage them to add their contact information to our Action Alert list. Remember: they don't necessarily have to be people who would choose out-of-hospital birth themselves; they just need to support the rights of Iowans who do choose out-of-hospital birth to have access to safe, legal midwifery care.
Another easy way to help our organization grow is to put a link to our website in the signature line of your emails or posts to online bulletin boards.
Write a letter
It’s important that every legislator hear from her/his own constituents in support of CPM licensure. Take a few minutes and write a letter to your representative explaining why you support Iowa families’ right to birth at home with a licensed midwife. Handwritten letters are best. Visit our letter writing page for sample letters.
Pay attention to your local press
When an article on birth- or midwifery-related issues appears, respond with a letter to the editor or an op-ed.
Attend a legislative forum or make a trip to the Capitol
Bring a friend! There are lots of opportunities to talk with your legislators, and it's their job to listen.
Volunteer
Consider sharing your talents on one of our committees. We are always looking for people who have legislative experience and/or skills in the areas of public relations, fundraising, event planning, and outreach.
